Pruett - Pruitt Family
Robert Pruitt
3rd generation
son of Obadiah Pruitt
ROBERT
PRUETT was born Dec 25, 1791 in Goochland co, Va (or NC).
Robert's mother
died when he was 6 months old and he was nursed by a negro slave.
[Maybe
it was Bett who was given to Obediah by his father.] When he was
just 3 months past 2 years old, his father remarried, so he was raised
by his step-mother, Nancy (Lovell).
Robert moved with his father to Mason Co, (W)Va. and married
there. Mason county was formed in 1804.
The 1810
census of Mason Co, (W)Va. shows:
p375 - Prewet, Obed
p376A - Knap, Moses [his future father-in-law]
He & Mary Martha "Patsy" Knapp (b Aug 25, 1799, Fleming Co,
Ky; she was 13 when they married) were
married in Mason Co, (W)Va. Their marriage bond was signed Sept 7, 1812
by Robert Pruett and Moses Knapp. They spent their first years together
after 1815 in (W)Virginia.

He was in the War of 1812. Pictured at right
is a soldier in an 1812 uniform.
In 1827 (probably the summer), the family moved Indiana. Daughter
Jane was born in Feb 1828 in Monroe co, IN (probably around
Bloomington). Monroe County was formed in 1818 from Orange
Co. The National Road didn't move into east Indiana until 1827,
and didn't go to Indianapolis until 1831, so they must have had a rough
road to travel.
He bought land in Indiana in 1831 and 1837. The land records say he
lived in Vermillion Co, Ind.
Bureau of Land Management records at:
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/
Robert Pruett of Vermillion co, Ind. (west side of IN) bought 80 acres
on July 1, 1831 (also Oct. 1 & 3, 1834), then again on March 18,
1837. He bought 2 pieces of land, one was 160 acres and the other was
80 acres.
The 1850 census has Jane, Eliza, Elizabeth and Maria born in Indiana
between 1829 & 1837.
There was a Robert H. PUETT (sic) in Vermillion Co, Indiana in 1830
[middle initial is unreadable], p221

This family on the 1830 census doesn't seem to match our Robert
Pruett's family though!
Robert moved to Illinois between 1837 and 1840, maybe it was 1839. All
his children were born in Mason Co, (W)Va. or in Indiana.
The Illinois Public Domain Land Tract Sales database shows 7 land
purchases in Marion Co. from 1839 to 1855.
1840 & 1850 he was in Marion Co, Il.
1840 IL census - Marion Co (twps not listed), p 168:
